Delegate Ambler Appointed House Chairman of Joint Legislative Committee on Flooding

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay, today announced he has appointed Delegate George “Boogie” Ambler, R-Greenbrier, as the House of Delegates’ Chairman for the Joint Legislative Committee on Flooding.

The committee, created in response to the disastrous June 2016 floods, is in charge of regularly reviewing the state’s flood disaster response programs and recommending legislation to improve flood prevention, planning and response efforts. It consists of five members of the House and five members of the state Senate.

“Since this committee began, Delegate Ambler has been actively involved in making sure we as a state are doing everything we can to mitigate future flood damage and find ways to improve our state’s response to these natural disasters,” Speaker Hanshaw said. “I can think of no better person to help guide this committee’s work as it prepares bills to be presented during the 2019 legislative session.”

Delegate Ambler was one of the original appointees to the committee when it was created last year, and now succeeds Speaker Hanshaw as House co-chairman of the committee. Speaker Hanshaw stepped down from the committee following his election as House Speaker last month; Delegate Dean Jeffries, R-Kanawha, was also appointed to the committee fill the vacancy created by Speaker Hanshaw’s departure.

“I’m honored by this appointment and look forward to continuing this committee’s work to improve our state’s flood response efforts,” Chairman Ambler said. “The Greenbrier Valley suffered significant damage in the June 2016 floods, and we learned we must do better as a state to respond to these disasters. I’m committed to spending the upcoming months to prepare a package of legislation to continue our improvements to the state’s disaster prevention and recovery efforts.”

In addition to Chairman Ambler, state Sen. Ed Gaunch, R-Kanawha, serves as the Senate’s Chairman of the Flooding Committee.
